She soon says, “You’re my best friend, Ed.”
“I know.”
You can kill a man with those words.
No gun.
No bullets.
Just words and a girl. (pg. 128)
In this scene, Audrey had come over to Ed’s shack wanting to check if he was okay, as in a few chapters ago, Ed had been beaten up by Daryl and Keith. She had asked Ed about what he had to do about the cards, and Ed explains how he ‘read to an old woman, let a sweet girl run barefoot until she was all trodden-on and bloody and glorious.’, and how he nearly killed a man that was raping his wife. Treading lightly, Audrey asks did the man who was raping his wife deserve the treatment that Ed gave him, to which Ed goes off on a rant, how everyone doing what they want to do and Ed just stuck ‘saving the world’. He says that he wishes it was easier for him, he wishes somebody else was chosen instead of him, if he hadn’t stopped the robbery he wouldn’t be going through what he is now, and he wishes that he was with Audrey rather than with her boyfriend, Simon.
What this quote reveals about Audrey is that she is Ed’s best friend but they’ll be nothing more. They will forever be friends, and honestly, they are both fine with that, but Ed wants something more which Audrey cannot provide for him.

‘I think of how she lives alone, just like me, and how she never had any real family, and how she only had sex with people. She never lets any love get in the way. I think she had a family once, but it was one of those beat-the-crap-out-of-each-other situations. There’s no shortage of them around here. I think she loved them and all they ever did was hurt her.
That’s why she refuses to love.’ (pg. 24)
In this scene, this is where the introduction of the characters begins. All four friends are playing ‘Annoyance’, and Ed is narrating, telling the story of his friends and their lives.
What this quote reveals about Audrey is why she refuses to love Ed. That her family are the real reason as to why she is the way she is. It isn’t that she doesn’t want to love someone; it’s that if she allows herself to, she believes that it’ll find a way to break her heart and she’d rather not love someone than risk the pain and torment of if she did.

Can I come in? I wonder, but my answer arrives within a few edgy moments, when that guy from work enters the background, asking, ‘Who is it, darlin’?’
‘Oh,’ Audrey shuffles.
Uncomfortable.
Then offhand.
‘Oh, it’s just Ed.’
Just Ed. (pg. 123)
In this scene, Audrey and Ed are discussing the new card that Ed had received: Clubs. She notices how Ed has blood all over his neck and is quick to ask what happened, but he quickly shoots her down. Just as Ed is about to ask to go inside her house, Audrey’s boyfriend comes out to see who she is talking to.
What this quote reveals about Audrey is that she doesn’t mean to be rude, but in the presence of her boyfriend, she comes off as a bit mean towards Ed. It’s not that she means to refer to him as ‘Just Ed’, someone who has nothing special about them; it’s just the way she says it makes it seem that way.
