I think the audience responded to Audrey positively at the start, but as the story went on, the readers view on her declined. Throughout the book, she could never love Ed because of her past and being afraid of history repeating itself, and that was fine, we could accept that. But then in the last chapter, it’s like she had a change of heart or something just transformed inside of her that let her accept the fact that she could love Ed. I believe some of the audience might have felt that this was what put them off Audrey, and how she just couldn’t accept Ed since the start, but to others they might’ve thought that it was a beautiful way to Ed an adventurous story.
Audrey would be a dynamic character, because as stated before, she wouldn’t allow herself to love anyone. But throughout the course of the book, seeing Ed transforms himself, from someone who was nobody to a person who was capable of many things, must have changed her look on life.
I think Mark Zusak was trying to convey via Audrey was if you allow and accept your fear, then true potential can arise. If you work hard enough to confront and face your fear, than you have nothing to fear.
I believe that Zusak communicated this message quite well, because in the end Audrey did face her fear and allowed herself to love. She believed in herself, that she could do it, and she achieved her goal.
